This enclosure holds 1.00 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille Pro MP 250 runs a system Qtc of 0.72–0.74 with half power at 38.2–39.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 17.0 mm travel limit at 333 W, below the driver’s 600 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 503 W — +170 W, or 51 percent more power for the same 17.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

At 50.0–50.9 the MP 250 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

The box lifts resonance from 27.0–30.0 Hz free-air to 39–41 Hz and half power lands at 38.2–39.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 17.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 17.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 333 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 600 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 503 W before hitting the same 17.0 mm. That is 51 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Hertz markets the MP 250 as a compact sealed driver and recommends 17 liters. This cabinet gives it 28. That is not us second-guessing Hertz, it is what the driver's own geometry forces.

Two things drive it. The MP 250 mounts 5.80 inches deep, and it displaces 3.2 liters of airspace on its own, which is a lot for a 10. Our double baffle recovers 0.75 inches because the outer layer is a flush recess, the milled magnet relief recovers another 0.375, and half an inch of clearance behind the motor puts the minimum internal height at 5.1875 inches. That is 1.00 cubic foot net once you subtract the driver.

The result is better than the target. At Hertz's 0.60 net this driver lands at Qtc 0.849. At 1.00 it drops to 0.741 with F3 improving from 40.6 to 39.4 Hz. Tighter, more controlled, and slightly deeper. Fifth time in this program that a fitment constraint produced a better alignment than the manufacturer's compact recommendation.

On the driver: 17mm of linear excursion with 27mm of mechanical travel before damage is real headroom, and the V-cone profile is the genuine article rather than styling. Pressing paper pulp with mineral powder injection is the same process Hertz uses on Mille Legend, and the profile makes the cone behave like a piston instead of flexing at the edges. The 65mm four-layer CCAW coil on a vented former handles the thermal side.

Sensitivity is 83.4 dB, which is on the low side, so give it real power. 600 watts RMS is the rating and it will use all of it.

One note if you are cross-shopping our Hertz cabinets: the Mille Pro MPS 250 is the shallow version at 4.0 inches and gets a 4.9375 inch cabinet. The MP 250 here is the deeper, higher-excursion driver and needs 7.4375. Different tools.

Questions

Why is this enclosure larger than Hertz's recommended 17 liters?

Two reasons, both driver geometry. The MP 250 mounts 5.80 inches deep, and it displaces 3.2 liters of airspace on its own, which is substantial for a 10 inch driver. Our double baffle recovers 0.75 inches since the outer layer is a flush recess and the driver bolts to the inner layer, and a 3/8 inch milled relief behind the magnet recovers a little more. Even so, the minimum internal height works out to 5.1875 inches, which is 1.00 cubic foot net after the driver's own displacement.

The result works in your favor. At Hertz's 0.60 cubic feet the system sits at Qtc 0.849 with F3 at 40.6 Hz. At 1.00 cubic feet it lands at Qtc 0.741 with F3 at 39.4 Hz. Better damped, tighter transient control, and marginally deeper extension.

How does the MP 250 differ from the Mille Pro MPS 250?

Depth and excursion. The MPS 250 is the shallow-mount version at roughly 4 inches deep, and its Down Fire enclosure stands 4.9375 inches tall. The MP 250 mounts 5.80 inches and needs the 7.4375 inch cabinet on this page.

In exchange the MP 250 offers more excursion at 17mm linear against the MPS 250's figure, more power handling at 600 watts RMS, and a lower free-air resonance. If vertical clearance is your constraint, the MPS is the answer. If you have the height, the MP is the more capable driver.

What is the V-cone profile?

It is Hertz's cone geometry, shaped so the diaphragm resists bending rather than relying purely on material thickness. The cone itself is made by pressing paper pulp with mineral powders injected into it, the same construction technique Hertz uses on their flagship Mille Legend line.

The point is that the cone moves as a rigid piston instead of flexing at the outer edge as excursion increases. Cone flex is a real source of distortion at high output, and it is one of the things that separates a well-engineered driver from a cheap one at the same nominal specification.

How do I wire this enclosure and set my impedance?

The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Final impedance is set at the driver, and it depends on which version you buy.

The MP 250 D2.3 has dual 2-ohm coils: parallel gives 1 ohm, series gives 4 ohms. The MP 250 D4.3 has dual 4-ohm coils: parallel gives 2 ohms, series gives 8. Hertz rates the driver at 600 watts RMS. Confirm your amplifier is stable at your chosen load before powering the system.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Why are the corners square instead of radiused?

Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or cargo deck, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. That recovers 3/4 inch of internal clearance for a deep driver. A 3/8 inch relief is milled into the opposite panel behind the magnet. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
