This enclosure holds 0.51 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 runs a system Qtc of 0.75 with half power at 42.9 Hz, and the cone reaches its 16.8 mm travel limit at 738 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 949 W — +211 W, or 29 percent more power for the same 16.8 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

At 55.8 the Mille PRO MPS 250 S4 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

The box lifts resonance from 29.0 Hz free-air to 46 Hz and half power lands at 42.9 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 16.8 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 16.8 mm. Unfiltered that is 738 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 949 W before hitting the same 16.8 mm. That is 29 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

16.8mm of Xmax on a shallow 10. That number stops me every time I read it. Most shallow 10s in this program run 8 to 13mm. Hertz got nearly 17 out of a driver that mounts in 3.25 inches, and paired it with 500 watts RMS. That is a lot of displacement capability from a thin package.

At 0.51 net, which is Hertz's own recommendation, the S2 lands at Qtc 0.673 and the S4 at 0.754. Both are clean, controlled alignments. This driver is not fighting you the way the high-Qts shallows do.

Here is the thing to get right on coil choice, because it is backwards from what you would guess. On the MPS 250 the S2 is the better damped driver at Qts 0.41, against the S4 at 0.48. On the 12 inch MPS 300 that flips completely - there the S4 is tighter at 0.42 against the S2 at 0.51. Same series, opposite pattern. Do not assume it carries across sizes.

Worth saying after a run of manuals that did not check out: Hertz's numbers reconcile. Run their published Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math at their recommended volume and you land within 0.03 of the Qtc they print. Rockford, Arc and Diamond all needed a correction note on their pages. Hertz did not. That earns some trust in the rest of their data.

At 4.9375 inches this is the second shortest cabinet we build, behind only the Alpine RS-W 10. If your under-seat measurement is tight, this and the Alpine are the two to look at.

Single voice coil, so impedance is fixed by which model you buy. No wiring decision at the driver. Target 400 to 500 watts RMS.

Questions

Should I choose the MPS 250 S2 or the MPS 250 S4?

On this size the S2 is the better damped driver. It has a free-air Qts of 0.41 against the S4's 0.48, landing at Qtc 0.754 in this cabinet versus 0.754. The S4 does reach slightly lower, F3 42.9 Hz against 48.4, and carries more motor force at 17.3 T·m against 14.7.

Important: this pattern reverses on the 12 inch MPS 300, where the S4 is the tighter driver. Do not assume what you learn here applies to the other size. Both models are single voice coil, so the impedance is fixed by the model you buy - 2 ohms for the S2, 4 ohms for the S4. Check your amplifier first, then decide on character.

How much excursion does this driver have?

16.8mm one-way, which is exceptional for a shallow-mount 10. Most drivers in this category run between 8 and 13mm. Combined with a 500 watt RMS rating and a 3.25 inch mounting depth, the MPS 250 delivers a great deal of displacement capability from a very thin package. That is the core reason to choose this driver over a conventional shallow.

Do your numbers match the Hertz manual?

Yes, and that is worth stating because it is not universal. Running Hertz's own published Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math at their recommended volume produces a Qtc within 0.03 of the figure printed in their manual. Their enclosure data and their Thiele-Small data agree with each other.

Several other manufacturers in this category publish enclosure tables that do not reconcile with their own driver parameters, sometimes by 0.2 or more, which forces us to publish computed figures instead. Hertz did not have that problem, so the numbers on this page and the numbers in the Hertz manual are the same numbers.

Does it matter whether the coils are wired in series or parallel?

The MPS 250 is a single voice coil driver, so there is no coil wiring decision to make. Your impedance is determined by which model you buy: 2 ohms for the S2, 4 ohms for the S4.

For reference, Hertz measures Thiele-Small parameters with coils in parallel on their dual coil models and notes that Fs, Vas and Qts are identical in series wiring, with only Re, Le and BL changing. That principle is why one enclosure design serves multiple wiring configurations across their range.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Why are the corners square instead of radiused?

Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets. On a cabinet under 5 inches tall the baffle carries a large share of the structural load, since there is minimal room for bracing geometry. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
