Performance in this enclosure
01Is it a sealed driver?
Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.
02What the box does to it
1.09 cu ft against a 32.2 L Vas.
03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)
Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 14.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Installer's take
Qtc 0.693 on a driver JL recommends 0.625 cubic feet for. That is not a coincidence, and it is not us second-guessing JL. It is what happens when a 5.93 inch mounting depth forces the cabinet larger than the recommendation.
Here is the chain. 5.93 inches of driver, minus 0.75 because our outer baffle layer is a flush recess and the driver bolts to the inner layer, minus 0.375 for the milled magnet relief, plus half an inch of clearance behind the motor. Minimum internal height is 5.3125 inches, which on this footprint is 1.09 net. You cannot build 0.625 with this driver in the box.
At JL's 0.625 this driver sits near Qtc 0.693. At 1.09 it drops to 0.693, fourteen thousandths off the 0.707 maximally flat reference. Flatter response, tighter transients, lower group delay. The constraint made the box better than the recommendation.
This is the fourth driver in the Down Fire program where forced oversizing improved the alignment rather than hurting it. Worth understanding why: sealed Qtc always drops as the box grows, and JL's compact recommendations are aimed at people fighting for space in a trunk. We are already committed to a 30 by 15 footprint, so the volume comes free.
On the driver itself, the W3v3 is JL's workhorse. Dynamic Motor Analysis for linearity, Elevated Frame Cooling that routes air through slots above the top plate straight to the coil, mineral-filled polypropylene cone. 500 watts RMS and 14mm of Xmax. Built in Miramar.
Single voice coil at 4 ohms, so there is no wiring decision. JL recommends 150 to 500 watts. Run the top of that range.
Questions
Why is this enclosure larger than JL Audio's recommended 0.625 cubic feet?
Because the driver's mounting depth sets the minimum cabinet height. The 10W3v3-4 mounts 5.93 inches deep. Our double baffle recovers 0.75 inches of that, since the outer layer is a flush recess and the driver bolts to the inner layer, and a 3/8 inch milled relief behind the magnet recovers a little more. Even so, with half an inch of clearance behind the motor the minimum internal height is 5.3125 inches, which works out to 1.09 cubic feet net on this footprint. A 0.625 cubic foot cabinet physically cannot contain this driver.
The result is better than the target. At 0.625 net the system would sit near Qtc 0.693. At 1.09 it lands at 0.693, within fourteen thousandths of the 0.707 maximally flat reference. Flatter response, tighter transient control, and lower group delay.
What does a Qtc of 0.693 mean in practice?
Qtc describes how a sealed system behaves near its corner frequency. The textbook reference is 0.707, called maximally flat, which produces the flattest anechoic response with the best balance of extension and control. At 0.693 this enclosure sits just under that reference.
In practice you get flat response down to the corner, clean transient behavior with no overhang or boom, low group delay, and a gentle 12 dB per octave rolloff that integrates naturally with the rising cabin gain of a vehicle. It is the alignment sealed box design aims at.
How does the W3v3 compare to the TW3 in this same series?
Depth and power. The 10TW3-D4 is JL's Thin-Line shallow driver at 3.25 inches mounting depth with 400 watts RMS, and its Down Fire cabinet stands 4.9375 inches tall. The 10W3v3-4 mounts 5.93 inches with 500 watts RMS, and this cabinet stands 7.5625 inches.
The W3v3 is more efficient at 84.87 dB against the TW3's 82.10, and handles more power. The TW3 has more excursion at 15.2mm against 14.0mm and fits in 2.6 fewer inches of height. Both land near the maximally flat alignment in their respective cabinets. If vertical clearance is tight, take the TW3. If you have the room, the W3v3 gives you more power handling and better efficiency.
How do I wire this enclosure?
Straightforward, because the 10W3v3-4 is a single voice coil driver at 4 ohms nominal. There is no series or parallel decision to make. The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC, and the amplifier sees 4 ohms.
JL Audio rates this driver at 500 watts RMS continuous and recommends 150 to 500 watts of amplifier power. Confirm your amplifier is comfortable at 4 ohms and set your gain toward the upper end of that range.
Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?
Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.
What is the milled magnet relief and why is it there?
A 3/8 inch deep circular pocket machined into the panel directly behind the driver's magnet. On a down fire cabinet built around a driver as deep as the W3v3, that relief recovers useful clearance without adding cabinet height.
It matters for two reasons. First, it guarantees the motor has room to breathe rather than being crowded against a flat panel. Second, it lets the cabinet stay as short as possible while still leaving half an inch of clearance behind the magnet, which is our practical minimum for a driver at this power level.
How is this enclosure built?
V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.
The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. That recovers 3/4 inch of internal clearance for a deep driver. A 3/8 inch relief is milled into the opposite panel behind the magnet. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
Is the JL Audio 10W3v3-4 subwoofer included with this enclosure?
No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own JL Audio 10W3v3-4. The cutout, mounting depth and magnet clearance are all cut specifically for this driver.
