This enclosure holds 0.50 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Morel Ultimo PowerSlim PS104D runs a system Qtc of 1.16 with half power at 35.9 Hz, and the cone reaches its 11.0 mm travel limit at 314 W, below the driver’s 700 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 323 W — +9 W, or 3 percent more power for the same 11.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 32.3
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4 32.3
D4 · EBP 32.3
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The Ultimo PowerSlim PS104D sits at 32.3, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

0.50 cu ft against a 25.0 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 1.77  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 48 Hz  ·  Qtc = 1.16
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D4 · Qtc 1.16, Fc 48 Hz, F3 35.9 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 29.1 Hz free-air to 48 Hz and half power lands at 35.9 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 11.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 314 W unfiltered  →  323 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 11.0 mm 314 W reaches Xmax here
D4 · 314 W, no filterD4 · 323 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 11.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 11.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 314 W, reached first at 38 Hz. It sits under the 700 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 323 W before hitting the same 11.0 mm. That is 3 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

700 watts RMS in a driver that mounts in 3.1 inches. That is the highest power-to-depth ratio of anything in the Down Fire program, and it is not close. Most shallow 10s in this category handle 250 to 500 watts.

The reason is the voice coil. Morel uses a 129.5mm coil, which is 5.1 inches. Most shallow 10s run 2 to 2.5 inches. That is more than twice the diameter, wound in four layers of carbon on an aluminium former, and it is why this driver dissipates heat well enough to take 700 watts continuously with 1800 watts of transient headroom.

The Ultimo PowerSlim series won the EISA Best In-Car Subwoofer award for 2023-2024. That kind of thing is easy to dismiss as marketing, but the engineering here is real: flat honeycomb Hexatech aluminium cone, double magnet EVC motor system, and genuinely unusual coil geometry.

At Morel's own 0.5 net the alignment lands at Qtc 1.164 with F3 at 35.9 Hz computed. Morel publishes 42 Hz for this volume, so their data and ours agree within about 3 Hz, which is close by the standards of manuals in this category.

Qts is 0.7, so Qtc cannot fall below 0.7 in any sealed enclosure. The alignment sits just under unity with a modest lift near the corner. That is intended, not a compromise.

At 4.9375 inches this ties the Hertz MPS 250 cabinet as the second shortest we build, behind the Alpine RS-W 10. Dual 4 ohm coils, so set your impedance at the driver: 2 ohms parallel or 8 ohms series. Target 350 to 700 watts RMS.

Questions

How does this driver handle 700 watts at only 3.1 inches deep?

The voice coil. Morel uses a 129.5mm coil, which is 5.1 inches in diameter, where most shallow 10 inch subwoofers run a 2 to 2.5 inch coil. More than double the diameter means dramatically more surface area for heat dissipation, which is the limiting factor on continuous power handling.

The coil is wound in four layers of carbon on an aluminium former and paired with a double magnet EVC motor system. That combination gives 700 watts RMS with 1800 watts of transient headroom in a package 3.1 inches deep, which is the highest power-to-depth ratio of any driver in the Proline X Down Fire program.

Why is the Qtc close to 1.0?

The PS104D has a free-air Qts of 0.7, and system Qtc can never fall below the driver's Qts regardless of enclosure size. Even an infinite baffle would leave this driver above 0.7, so no sealed box reaches a textbook 0.707 alignment with it. At Morel's recommended 0.5 cubic feet net the system sits at Qtc 0.986, producing a modest lift near the corner frequency.

That is the intended character of the driver, and Morel designed their enclosure recommendation around it rather than in spite of it.

How does the PS104D compare to the Morel SCX102?

The PowerSlim is the shallow, higher-power option. It mounts in 3.1 inches with 700 watts RMS, and this cabinet stands 4.9375 inches tall. The SCX102 mounts in 5.26 inches with 500 watts RMS, and its Down Fire cabinet stands 6.875 inches.

The PowerSlim also has the lower free-air resonance at 29.1 Hz against the SCX102's 38.8 Hz, so it reaches deeper. Both use the same 5.1 inch voice coil. Unless you specifically want the SCX voicing, the PowerSlim is the stronger choice in this size, and it fits in two fewer inches of height.

How do I wire this enclosure and set my impedance?

The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. The PS104D has dual 4 ohm voice coils, so you set the final load at the driver: wire the two coils in parallel for a 2 ohm load, or in series for 8 ohms. Most single-driver builds run the 2 ohm configuration.

Morel rates this driver for a minimum of 350 watts and up to 700 watts RMS. Confirm your amplifier is stable at your chosen load and set gains within that range.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Why are the corners square instead of radiused?

Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets. On a cabinet under 5 inches tall the baffle carries a large share of the structural load, and with a 700 watt driver bolted to it that rigidity matters. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the Morel PS104D subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Morel Ultimo PowerSlim PS104D. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit.
