This enclosure holds 0.59 cu ft net per chamber. In it the ResoNix GUS-10 runs a system Qtc of 0.61–0.69 with half power at 39.5–43.3 Hz, and the cone reaches its 18.0 mm travel limit at 439 W, below the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 726 W — +287 W, or 65 percent more power for the same 18.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

At 54.4–59.9 the GUS-10 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

The box lifts resonance from 20.4 Hz free-air to 36–39 Hz and half power lands at 39.5–43.3 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 18.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 18.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 439 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 726 W before hitting the same 18.0 mm. That is 65 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

ResoNix publishes full Klippel LSI and TRF data for every GUS driver, promises to do it for every production batch, and their enclosure recommendations reconcile exactly with their own T/S parameters. Across sixteen driver families in this program, that combination is unique. Most manufacturers publish an enclosure table that disagrees with their own spec sheet by 10 Hz or more and hope nobody checks.

The GUS-10 is a 500 watt shallow 10 with 18mm of verified excursion in a 4 inch mounting depth, and the engineering is not marketing language. A patent pending full length copper shorting sleeve sitting outside the gap with the coil between the former and the sleeve. A titanium voice coil former, which eliminates eddy current drag and pushes heat away from the internal neo magnet. A Nomex honeycomb cone with carbon fiber facing. This is a genuinely expensive way to build a subwoofer.

Two practical things about this cabinet. First, the vented rear cone assembly means the pole vent can be fully blocked with no penalty, which is why we do not have to leave the usual clearance allowance behind the motor. ResoNix says this outright in their FAQ.

Second, and this is the one people miss: ResoNix requires 55mm of clearance from the baffle surface to whatever sits in front of the cone. On a down fire box that is the floor. This cabinet ships with custom-fit standoffs that hold that clearance. Set it flat on the carpet and you will restrict the driver.

On volume: the D4 wants 0.6 and gets 0.59 here, essentially perfect. The D2 wants 0.4 and gets 0.59, which lands at Qtc 0.609. That is more damped than ResoNix targets, meaning tighter and slightly less upper bass. Both are good; the D4 is the better match to this cabinet.

500 watts RMS, and ResoNix means it. They state plainly that they do not underrate their drivers to impress anyone and that overpower damage is not warranty work.

Questions

Why does this enclosure come with standoffs?

Because ResoNix specifies a minimum clearance in front of the cone, and on a down fire enclosure the thing in front of the cone is the floor. Their requirement for the GUS-10 is 23mm between the surround and the obstruction, or 55mm measured from the baffle surface.

This cabinet ships with custom-fit standoffs machined to hold that clearance. Setting a down fire GUS enclosure flat on the floor would restrict the driver and compromise both output and mechanical safety. The standoffs are a required part of the design, not an accessory.

Is down firing acceptable for a GUS subwoofer?

Yes, and ResoNix addresses it directly. Their published guidance is that there is very little real world difference in sound between down firing and up firing, and that you should choose whichever makes the installation easier, more reliable, and easier to service.

That endorsement comes from the driver's manufacturer rather than from us, which is worth noting given how often down fire orientation gets debated. The one requirement is maintaining their specified clearance in front of the cone, which the included standoffs handle.

Should I choose the Dual 2-Ohm or Dual 4-Ohm GUS-10?

For this cabinet, the Dual 4-Ohm is the better acoustic match. ResoNix targets 0.6 cubic feet for 0.707 Qtc on the D4, and this enclosure delivers 0.59 net, landing at Qtc 0.694 with F3 at 39.5 Hz.

The D2 targets 0.4 cubic feet, so in this enclosure it runs larger than intended and lands at Qtc 0.609 with F3 at 43.2 Hz. That is a more damped alignment: tighter transient control and a gentler rolloff, at the cost of a few hertz of extension. It is a perfectly usable result, just not the volume ResoNix designed the D2 around. Choose based on your amplifier's preferred load first, since both work well here.

Does the pole vent need to stay unobstructed?

No, and this is a deliberate design feature of the GUS series. The cone uses a vented rear assembly attached to the voice coil former, which handles venting even when the pole vent is completely blocked. ResoNix states in their own documentation that the pole vent can be fully obstructed with no negative side effects.

That is why this cabinet can be built without the rear motor clearance allowance most drivers require, which keeps the enclosure shorter than it would otherwise need to be.

How much power should I run to the GUS-10?

500 watts RMS, and not more. ResoNix is unusually direct about this: they state that the GUS series is not deliberately underrated the way many manufacturers rate their drivers, and that burnt voice coils or damage from bottoming out are not covered under warranty.

You can safely use an amplifier capable of more output so long as power delivered to the driver is limited to 500 watts. ResoNix also notes that because these drivers stay linear and low distortion right up to their limits, it will not always be obvious when you are pushing too hard, which is exactly why the rating should be respected.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build, and custom-fit standoffs are included to maintain ResoNix's required floor clearance. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
