Installer's take
4.25 inches. That is the shortest cabinet we build, and it holds 750 watts RMS with 20mm of excursion behind it.
Two things make that height possible, and only one of them is the 2.875 inch mounting depth. The other is that Wavtech specifies no rear clearance requirement on this driver. The magnet structure sits essentially flush with the frame rather than protruding into the airspace like a conventional vented-pole motor. Most deep drivers need half an inch of breathing room behind the motor, which we build in. The thinPRO10 does not, and that is worth three quarters of an inch of cabinet height.
Look at how the driver gets there. A 4.5 inch voice coil on a shallow 10, four layers, vented polyimide former. Dual internal mirrored NBR spiders rather than a single spider, with a reinforced axial force transfer assembly holding the cone on axis through full travel. FEA-optimized dual-gap motor with double-stacked strontium magnets. Honeycomb Nomex and glass fiber cone. This is a driver that was designed rather than assembled.
At 0.40 net this lands at Qtc 0.869 on the -2 and 0.821 on the -4. Wavtech's preferred volume is 0.35 where they publish 0.86 and 0.81, so we are within a hundredth of their intended alignment while giving the cabinet a small amount of extra breathing room. That is the right place to build.
Coil choice is simple since both are single voice coil. The -2 is 2 ohms, the -4 is 4 ohms, set by which model you buy rather than by wiring. The -2 has slightly lower Fs at 31 Hz and reaches about 3 Hz deeper; the -4 is marginally better damped.
Sensitivity is 81 to 82 dB, which is low. That is the cost of the excursion and the depth. Wavtech recommends 250 to 750 watts and I would run the top half of that.
Questions
How is this cabinet only 4.25 inches tall?
Two reasons, and the second one is the less obvious of the pair. First, the thinPRO10 mounts in only 2.875 inches. Second, and just as important, Wāvtech specifies no rear clearance requirement behind the motor. The magnet structure sits essentially flush with the frame rather than protruding into the airspace the way a conventional vented-pole motor does.
Most drivers in this program need half an inch of breathing room behind the magnet, which we build into the cabinet height. The thinPRO10 does not, and combined with our flush-recess outer baffle layer and the milled relief in the opposite panel, that lets the whole enclosure come in at 4.25 inches. It is the shortest cabinet in the Proline X Down Fire line.
How does the thinPRO10 handle 750 watts at under 3 inches deep?
The voice coil and the suspension. Wāvtech uses a 4.5 inch four-layer high-temp coil on a vented polyimide composite former, which is an unusually large coil for a shallow 10 and gives substantial surface area for heat dissipation. Heat is the limiting factor on continuous power handling.
The 20mm of one-way excursion comes from dual internal mirrored NBR spiders paired with a reinforced axial force transfer assembly, which keeps the cone traveling straight rather than rocking at long throw in a short frame. The motor is an FEA-optimized dual-gap structure with double-stacked strontium magnets. Together those give 750 watts RMS and 2250 watts peak in a 2.875 inch mounting depth.
Should I choose the thinPRO10-2 or the thinPRO10-4?
Both are single voice coil, so the impedance is fixed by which model you buy: 2 ohms for the -2, 4 ohms for the -4. There is no wiring decision at the driver. Start by checking what load your amplifier is stable and efficient into.
Acoustically they are close. The -2 has a slightly lower free-air resonance at 31 Hz against 32, and lands at Qtc 0.812 with F3 at 40.6 Hz in this cabinet. The -4 lands at Qtc 0.768 with F3 at 43.8 Hz, marginally better damped but about 3 Hz shallower. Both carry the same 750 watt RMS rating and the same 20mm of excursion.
How much power should I run to this subwoofer?
Wāvtech rates the thinPRO10 at 750 watts RMS with 2250 watts peak, and recommends 250 to 750 watts of amplifier power. Aim for the upper half of that range.
Sensitivity is 81 dB on the -2 and 82 dB on the -4, which is low. That is the tradeoff for packing a 4.5 inch coil and 20mm of excursion into a 2.875 inch frame: the motor prioritizes control and travel over efficiency. Underpowering this driver leaves significant output unused.
Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?
Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.
Why are the corners square instead of radiused?
Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.
How is this enclosure built?
V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.
The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. On a cabinet only 4.75 inches tall the baffle carries a large share of the structural load, and with a 750 watt driver bolted to it that rigidity matters. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
