Installer's take
32.2 Hz on the Dual 2-Ohm. That is the deepest single-driver figure anywhere in this program, across seventeen driver families, and it comes from a 15 that mounts in less than six inches.
The D2 measures 14.11 Hz free-air with 157.94 liters of Vas. Those are absurd numbers for a shallow 15. Add 25mm of Klippel-verified excursion across 804 square centimeters of cone and you have a driver that moves a genuinely large volume of air with real linearity behind it.
Worth understanding the 17 inch depth, because it is the first departure from our 15 inch platform. The GUS-15 cutout is 354.91mm, just under 14 inches. Internal span on a 15 inch deep cabinet is 13.5 inches. The hole would be wider than the cavity it sits in, which is not a tight fit, it is impossible. Seventeen inches gives 15.5 internal and leaves three quarters of an inch of baffle each side of the cutout. That is the minimum that works.
1.41 net lands on ResoNix's own 1.4 figure. D2 gives Qtc 0.690 at 32.2 Hz, D4 gives 0.675 at 35.7. If you want maximum depth take the D2; if your amplifier prefers a higher load the D4 is barely behind.
Standoffs are included and required. ResoNix specifies 65mm from the baffle surface to whatever is in front of the cone, which on a down fire box is the floor. Installed height lands near 11 inches once they are on. Cargo floor or rear wall.
1500 watts RMS, and ResoNix means it literally. They state they do not underrate their drivers and that overpower damage is not warranty work. At that power the electrical system needs to be genuinely sorted, not just adequate.
Questions
Why is this enclosure 17 inches deep instead of 15?
Because the GUS-15 will not physically fit a 15 inch deep cabinet. ResoNix specifies a mounting diameter of 354.91mm, which is 13.972 inches. On a 15 inch deep enclosure the internal span is 13.5 inches after panel thickness, so the cutout would be wider than the cavity holding it.
At 17 inches external the internal depth is 15.5 inches, which leaves roughly three quarters of an inch of baffle material on each side of the cutout. That is the minimum needed for a rigid baffle and a proper seal. Every other enclosure in the Proline X Down Fire line uses the 15 inch platform; this is the only one that needs the deeper footprint.
Should I choose the Dual 2-Ohm or Dual 4-Ohm GUS-15?
The Dual 2-Ohm reaches deeper. It measures 14.11 Hz free-air against the D4's 17.11 Hz, and in this cabinet lands at Qtc 0.690 with F3 at 32.2 Hz. The D4 lands at Qtc 0.675 with F3 at 35.7 Hz, marginally better damped but about three and a half hertz shallower.
Both are dual voice coil, so final impedance is set at the driver. The D2 wired parallel presents 1 ohm, which requires an amplifier explicitly rated for sustained 1-ohm operation at 1500 watts. That is a demanding load and not every 1-ohm-rated amplifier handles it reliably under continuous use. The D4 wired parallel gives 2 ohms, which is a far more common and forgiving load. Choose based on what your amplifier can actually deliver cleanly.
Why does this enclosure come with standoffs?
Because ResoNix specifies a minimum clearance in front of the cone, and on a down fire enclosure the thing in front of the cone is the floor. Their requirement for the GUS-15 is 33mm between the surround and the obstruction, or 65mm measured from the baffle surface. That is the largest clearance requirement in the GUS line, appropriate for a driver with 25mm of one-way excursion.
This cabinet ships with custom-fit standoffs machined to hold that clearance, which puts installed height near 11 inches. Setting a down fire GUS enclosure flat on the floor would restrict the driver and compromise both output and mechanical safety. The standoffs are a required part of the design, not an accessory.
Is down firing acceptable for a GUS subwoofer?
Yes, and ResoNix addresses it directly. Their published guidance is that there is very little real world difference in sound between down firing and up firing, and that you should choose whichever makes the installation easier, more reliable, and easier to service.
That endorsement comes from the driver's manufacturer rather than from us. The one requirement is maintaining their specified 65mm clearance in front of the cone, which the included standoffs handle.
Does the pole vent need to stay unobstructed?
No, and this is a deliberate design feature of the GUS series. The cone uses a vented rear assembly attached to the voice coil former, which handles venting even when the pole vent is completely blocked. ResoNix states in their own documentation that the pole vent can be fully obstructed with no negative side effects.
That is why this cabinet can be built without the rear motor clearance allowance most drivers require, which keeps a 15 inch down fire enclosure to 8.25 inches tall despite the driver's 5.807 inch mounting depth.
How much power should I run to the GUS-15?
1500 watts RMS, and not more. ResoNix is unusually direct about this: they state that the GUS series is not deliberately underrated the way many manufacturers rate their drivers, and that burnt voice coils or damage from bottoming out are not covered under warranty.
At 1500 watts the electrical system matters as much as the amplifier. Plan on a high-output alternator, adequate battery capacity, and correctly sized power and ground cable. ResoNix also notes these drivers stay linear and composed right up to their mechanical limits, so it will not always be obvious when you are pushing too hard. Warning signs are mechanical noise, clacking, or a sudden loss of control.
How is this enclosure built?
V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.
The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. With a 13.972 inch cutout and a 1500 watt driver bolted to it, that rigidity is not optional. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build, and custom-fit standoffs are included to maintain ResoNix's required floor clearance. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
