Installer's take
Two 12s in a cabinet 9.4375 inches tall. That is shorter than the CompRT dual 10 in this same series, which stands 10.125. Two more inches of cone diameter each, in a shorter box. That comparison is the entire case for the RS-W platform.
Alpine publishes 0.05 cubic feet of displacement for this driver. For a 12 that is extraordinary. Both drivers in this cabinet together displace 0.10 cubic feet, less than a single conventional 12 typically does. The neodymium motor is doing all of that work, and it is why the volume math on a dual 12 lands somewhere reasonable instead of producing a cabinet a foot tall.
Cone area across the pair is 1144 square centimeters, the most of anything in the Down Fire line. Combine that with 20mm of one-way excursion and 54mm of peak-to-peak mechanical travel per driver and you have serious displacement capability from a box that still fits in a cargo floor.
Separate chambers as always on a dual sealed build. Two drivers sharing one volume interact acoustically, each one's compression stroke becoming the other's pressure environment, which smears transients and blurs the alignment. A full-height bonded divider stops it. Each RS-W12 sees its own 0.70 net cubic feet and its own polyfill.
On volume: 0.70 per chamber sits between Alpine's small and medium recommendations, putting F3 in the low 30s. Their range runs to 1.5 per driver, but 1.20 per chamber on a dual would push this cabinet past 12 inches tall and out of the down fire category entirely. 0.70 is the right balance for a two-driver build on this footprint.
Wiring: one side-mounted cup feeds both driver positions in parallel. Set your final impedance at the drivers by how you wire each one's coils. Wire both identically. Alpine's application guide covers every option for both the D2 and D4 versions.
Questions
How is a dual 12 enclosure only 9.4375 inches tall?
The neodymium motor. Alpine publishes a displacement of just 0.05 cubic feet per RS-W12, so both drivers in this cabinet together consume 0.10 cubic feet, which is less than a single conventional 12 inch subwoofer typically displaces on its own. Nearly all of the internal volume is usable air rather than magnet structure. Combined with the 0.70 cubic feet net per chamber this design targets, that keeps the cabinet under 9.5 inches. For comparison, the Kicker CompRT dual 10 in this same series stands 10.125 inches tall.
Why two separate chambers instead of one shared volume?
Because two drivers in a shared sealed volume interact acoustically. Each driver's compression phase becomes the pressure environment the other driver is working against, which smears transient response and blurs the alignment each would have on its own. A full-height bonded 3/4 inch MDF divider eliminates that completely. Each RS-W12 gets its own 0.70 cubic feet net, its own polyfill, and produces its own clean sealed alignment. Separate chambers are the standing design rule on every Proline X dual sealed enclosure.
How does this compare to the single 12 inch RS-W Down Fire enclosure?
Acoustically identical per driver, roughly 6 dB more maximum output. Both give each RS-W12 exactly 0.70 cubic feet net and land F3 in the low 30 Hz range. The difference is physical: both share the 30 by 15 inch footprint, but the single stands 5.75 inches tall and the dual stands 9.4375. The dual doubles cone area to 1144 cm² and power handling to 1200 watts RMS combined, with no change in character.
How is this enclosure wired, and how do I set my final impedance?
The enclosure uses one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup with a single pair of posts, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC to both driver positions in parallel. You do not wire the two chambers separately at the amplifier.
Final impedance is set at the drivers. Each RS-W12 is a dual voice coil subwoofer, available in 2 ohm or 4 ohm versions, so you choose how to wire the two coils on each driver and that determines the load the amplifier sees through the cup. Wire both drivers identically, since mismatched wiring between chambers will split power unevenly. Alpine's application guide ships with the drivers and diagrams every configuration.
Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?
Side mounted, and there is one cup serving both chambers rather than one per chamber. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since both baffles face the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.
Why are the corners square instead of radiused?
Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or cargo deck, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.
How is this enclosure built?
V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps both chambers airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The chamber divider is a full-height bonded 3/4 inch panel. Front baffles are double-layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, at both driver positions, which matters with two 11-5/8 inch cutouts in the same cabinet. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill in each chamber complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
