This enclosure holds 1.00 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Sony XS-W104ES runs a system Qtc of 0.66 with half power at 57.4 Hz, and the cone reaches its 6.5 mm travel limit at 77 W, below the driver’s 450 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 101 W — +24 W, or 31 percent more power for the same 6.5 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 76.2
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 SVC 4 76.2
SVC 4 · EBP 76.2
At 76.2 the XS-W104ES sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

02What the box does to it

1.00 cu ft against a 23.3 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 0.82  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 53 Hz  ·  Qtc = 0.66
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
SVC 4 · Qtc 0.66, Fc 53 Hz, F3 57.4 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 39.6 Hz free-air to 53 Hz and half power lands at 57.4 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 6.5 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 77 W unfiltered  →  101 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 6.5 mm 77 W reaches Xmax here
SVC 4 · 77 W, no filterSVC 4 · 101 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 6.5 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 6.5 mm. Unfiltered that is 77 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 450 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 101 W before hitting the same 6.5 mm. That is 31 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Sony's Mobile ES Series doesn't get enough credit in the SQ world. The XS-W104ES is a genuinely refined driver, the cone composition (mica flake, aramid, pulp with a honeycomb core) is engineered for low coloration, and the separated-notch rubber surround keeps the suspension behaving consistently across temperature swings. It's not the loudest 10 you can buy. It's one of the cleanest. That refinement is exactly why the box matters. A driver this well-engineered shows up its own enclosure faster than a brawler-spec SPL sub will. Run an XS-W104ES in a generic 0.6 or 0.75 cu ft sealed box and you'll wonder why everyone praises Sony's ES Series. Run it in a properly sized 1.0 cu ft sealed cabinet, like this one, and the answer becomes obvious. Tight transients, honest tonality, and a midbass region that integrates cleanly with quality components. The 9.5" cabinet depth on this PO box is intentional. The Sony's mounting depth is just under 5.5", and the baffle and back wall need enough internal clearance to keep airflow around the magnet structure clean. Some generic 10" boxes run shallower than this and end up with the magnet two inches from the back panel, fine for cheap drivers, not fine for one engineered to Sony's standards. The single 4-ohm voice coil also keeps the wiring conversation simple. No D2 vs D4 deliberation, no parallel/series math. One driver, one impedance, one wiring path. Pair it with a clean monoblock putting 350-450 watts RMS into 4 ohms and you're done. Sony's own Mobile ES amplifiers are the ideal match if you want a fully matched system, but any quality 4-ohm-stable monoblock will get you there. If you've chosen the XS-W104ES, you've already made the SQ-oriented call. This box is the next decision in the same direction.

Questions

What size enclosure does the Sony XS-W104ES need?

The Sony XS-W104ES Mobile ES Series 10" subwoofer performs best in a 1.0 cubic foot net sealed enclosure. The Proline X Performance Optimized Sealed 10 for Sony ES delivers exactly 1.0 cubic feet net internal volume, engineered specifically around the XS-W104ES.

What are the dimensions of the Performance Optimized Sealed 10 enclosure for the Sony XS-W104ES?

The Performance Optimized Sealed 10 enclosure for the Sony XS-W104ES measures 20" wide x 14" tall x 9.5" deep externally. Net internal volume is 1.0 cubic foot, with a maximum mounting depth of 8 inches behind the baffle.

How much power can the Sony XS-W104ES handle?

The Sony XS-W104ES handles 450 watts RMS and 1800 watts peak. For best results in the Performance Optimized Sealed 10 enclosure, pair the XS-W104ES with a clean monoblock amplifier delivering 350 to 450 watts RMS at 4 ohms.

What impedance is the Sony XS-W104ES subwoofer?

The Sony XS-W104ES is a single 4-ohm voice coil subwoofer. The driver wires directly to a monoblock amplifier stable at 4 ohms with no parallel or series configuration required.

Will a different 10-inch subwoofer fit in the Performance Optimized Sealed 10 for Sony ES?

The Performance Optimized Sealed 10 for Sony ES is engineered specifically for the Sony XS-W104ES, with airspace and mounting depth tuned to that driver. Other 10-inch subwoofers can physically mount in the cabinet, but performance is only optimized for the XS-W104ES.
