Installer's take
The 13TW5v2 is JL's engineering flex, a 13.5" cone with a 7" voice coil and 11mm one-way Xmax, packaged in 2.625" of mounting depth. When JL first launched the TW5 series, this driver rewrote what was possible in shallow-mount subwoofer design. Everyone else was doing 8" or 10" shallow drivers because that's what the geometry could accommodate. JL said "hold my Santoprene" and shipped a 13.5" thin-line. It works because of the concentric tube suspension architecture that lets the 7" voice coil operate inside the cone body itself rather than behind it. That's the trick.
600 watts RMS. That's a real 600 watts RMS with a driver that has the thermal mass to handle it, unlike the TW3 which tops out at 400W. The TW5v2 is the shallow-mount driver you buy when you need real output, not just real cone area.
Volume math is dialed. 0.852 cu ft gross minus the 13TW5v2's 0.052 cu ft displacement = 0.800 cu ft net. JL's published sealed spec is exactly 0.80 cu ft net. Right on the money. In that alignment, the TW5v2 delivers the response character JL's engineers targeted, deep, controlled, warm-forward bass with the impact you'd expect from 13.5" of cone area.
Important: JL specifies this driver for SEALED use ONLY. Not "sealed or ported, up to you." Sealed only. Running the 13TW5v2 in a ported box significantly increases the risk of cone unloading (over-excursion below port tuning), which will permanently damage the concentric tube suspension. That's not a warranty scare. That's actual mechanical damage to a unique suspension design that has less tolerance for unloaded operation than a standard spider-and-surround setup. If you want a ported 13, get a 13W7AE or a 13W3v3. If you want a shallow-mount 13, this box is what you need.
Wedge geometry is the standard PO trunk-load pattern, sized appropriately for a 13. 28.34" wide, 15.9" tall, 4.12" deep at top, 9.89" deep at bottom. That 4.12" top depth is the shallowest we've built to date, even shallower than the 12TW3's 4.5", because the TW5v2's 2.625" mounting depth allows it. The whole system stays vehicle-friendly despite being a 13.5" driver.
Fitment considerations: 15.9" tall is up there. The cabinet will fit in most sedan trunks and SUV cargo areas, but check your specific vehicle. If your parcel shelf clearance is under 15", you can't run this cabinet. You'd need to step down to the 12TW3 which is 14.5" tall. In wagons, hatchbacks, and coupes with proper trunks, 15.9" typically fits fine. In pickup extended-cab or crew-cab installs where the cabinet goes behind the rear seat, 15.9" is fine if your rear seat back doesn't fully recline against the cab wall.
Unlike the TW3 which uses the tab-ear mounting design, the TW5v2 uses a standard perimeter mounting flange with a 13.5" bolt circle around the 12.5" cutout. Standard machine screws through threaded inserts. No plastic tabs to worry about cracking, no special hardware requirements. Cleaner install than the TW3.
Damping note: the TW5v2 is sensitive to overpacking with polyfill. JL says a light layer on the walls only. Don't stuff around the driver. The concentric tube suspension needs freedom to move air within the cabinet. Over-damping restricts cone motion and chokes the low end. The Proline X cabinet ships with the right amount of polyfill already placed. Don't add more.
Power target: JL specs 250 to 600 watts RMS. Real-world sweet spot is 400 to 600 watts. This driver actually needs power to get moving. 250W will feel underwhelming given the cone area. Give it 500-600W of clean class D monoblock power at your chosen impedance and it delivers the output the driver is designed for. Subsonic filter around 25-30 Hz is important to protect the suspension from below-Fs excursion. Set your low-pass around 80-100 Hz for musical accuracy.
Impedance choice: 2-ohm variant for maximum output from a modern class D amp, 4-ohm for dual-driver installs (two 4-ohm drivers paralleled = 2-ohm total) or for amps optimized around 4-ohm loads.
If you want JL's absolute best 13.5" shallow-mount driver in a spec-perfect trunk-load wedge, this is the box.
Questions
What size enclosure does the JL Audio 13TW5v2 need?
JL Audio publishes exactly one recommended sealed enclosure volume for the 13TW5v2: 0.80 cubic feet net internal. The Audio Intensity Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 13 for TW5 delivers 0.852 cubic feet gross internal, which after subtracting the 13TW5v2's 0.052 cubic foot driver displacement lands exactly at the 0.80 cubic foot JL spec. Important: JL specifies this driver for SEALED use only. Ported enclosures risk permanently damaging the concentric tube suspension through cone unloading.
What are the dimensions of the Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 13 for the JL TW5?
The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 13 for JL Audio TW5 measures 28.34" wide x 15.9" tall externally, with an ultra-shallow wedge depth of just 4.12" at the top and 9.89" at the bottom. The angled seat-side face sits approximately 20 degrees back from vertical, matching typical rear seat back lean angles. The 4.12" top depth is the shallowest in the PO wedge lineup, engineered around the TW5's remarkable 2.625" shallow-mount depth.
Why choose the JL Audio 13TW5v2 over the standard 13W3v3 or 12W6v3?
Choose the JL Audio 13TW5v2 when you need JL's flagship 13.5" cone area in a vehicle where the 13W3v3 (7.63" mounting depth, 1.5-1.75 cu ft cabinet) or 12W6v3 (7.52" mounting depth, 1.0 cu ft cabinet) simply won't fit. The TW5v2 mounts in just 2.625" of depth and operates in a 0.80 cu ft cabinet. Far smaller than either standard driver. It's JL's premium shallow-mount tier, above the TW3 series (400W RMS, tab-ear mounting) with a full 600W RMS power handling and a Santoprene surround. The TW5v2 is the driver you buy when space constraints eliminate the standard W-series options but you still want flagship performance.
How much power can the JL Audio 13TW5v2 handle?
The JL Audio 13TW5v2 handles 600 watts RMS continuous, with JL recommending amplifier power in the 250 to 600 watt RMS range. This driver benefits from real power. 250W will feel underwhelming given the 13.5" cone area. For balanced output and full-potential performance, pair with a clean, well-regulated class D monoblock delivering 400-600 watts RMS at your chosen impedance. A subsonic filter set around 25-30 Hz is recommended to protect the concentric tube suspension from over-excursion below the driver's 27.6 Hz free-air resonance.
What impedance options are available for the JL Audio 13TW5v2?
JL Audio offers the 13TW5v2 in two single-voice-coil impedance configurations: 13TW5v2-2 (Single 2-ohm) and 13TW5v2-4 (Single 4-ohm). Both fit this cabinet identically. For a single-driver install, the 2-ohm variant is the higher-output choice, ideal for modern class D monoblocks stable at 2 ohms. The 4-ohm variant is preferred for dual-driver installs (two 4-ohm drivers wired in parallel present a 2-ohm total load) or with amplifiers optimized around 4-ohm output.
What is the mounting depth of the JL Audio 13TW5v2?
The JL Audio 13TW5v2 has a mounting depth of just 2.625 inches, with a mounting hole cutout of 12.5 inches, a 13.5" bolt circle diameter, and a 14.2" overall diameter. This is JL's shallowest 13.5" driver, made possible by the patented concentric tube suspension architecture that places the 7" voice coil inside the cone body itself. The Performance Optimized Wedge Sealed 13 for TW5 provides ample clearance behind the driver. Over 5.6" at the mounting center position.
Can the JL Audio 13TW5v2 be used in a ported enclosure?
No. JL Audio specifically optimizes the 13TW5v2 for SEALED enclosures only. Ported operation significantly increases the risk of cone unloading (over-excursion below the port tuning frequency), which can permanently damage the concentric tube suspension system unique to the TW5 platform. This is not a warranty concern but an actual mechanical limitation of the suspension design. If you need a ported 13" JL driver, consider the 13W3v3 or 13W7AE instead. Also do not use a passive crossover coil in series with this driver, use your amplifier's active low-pass filter set between 80-100 Hz, with a subsonic filter around 25-30 Hz to protect the suspension.
