This enclosure holds 1.085 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Arc Audio ARC 12 runs a system Qtc of 0.77–0.87 with half power at 36.6–39.0 Hz, and the cone reaches its 15.0 mm travel limit at 368 W, above the driver’s 350 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 455 W — +87 W, or 24 percent more power for the same 15.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The ARC 12 sits at 43.5–48.6, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

The box lifts resonance from 22.8–23.2 Hz free-air to 42–43 Hz and half power lands at 36.6–39.0 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 15.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 15.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 368 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits above the 350 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 455 W before hitting the same 15.0 mm. That is 24 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

This is the cabinet where the ARC Series stops fighting the down fire format and starts agreeing with it.

On the 10 inch version, Arc's 0.75 gross optimum is unreachable. The driver mounts 5.5 inches deep and their volume would need a box 3.5 inches tall, so we are forced well above their maximum and have to explain why. On the 12, the 6 inch mounting depth demands 5.375 inches of internal height, which produces 1.155 gross. Arc's range is 0.9 to 1.25 gross with 1.1 optimum. We land five percent over optimum and squarely inside the window. Nothing to apologise for.

The two coil options are genuinely different here, more so than on most drivers. Dual 2-Ohm sits at Qts 0.416 and gives Qtc 0.770 with F3 at 39.0 Hz. Dual 4-Ohm sits at Qts 0.468 and gives Qtc 0.873 with F3 at 36.6 Hz. That is a hundred thousandths of Qtc and two and a half hertz between them, which you will hear.

My read: the Dual 2-Ohm is the one to buy if you care about accuracy. 0.770 is a clean, controlled alignment. The Dual 4-Ohm at 0.873 has real lift near the corner and reaches deeper, which some people want and some people call boomy. Pick deliberately rather than by whatever your amp happens to like.

The number people overlook on this driver is 89 dB sensitivity. Two full decibels above the ARC 10 and well ahead of most shallow drivers in this program, several of which sit at 81 or 82. This driver gets loud on modest power, so 350 watts RMS goes further than the number suggests.

Respect that 350 though. Arc rates honestly rather than optimistically, and their manual states plainly that sustained operation above RMS burns coils and voids warranty. With 89 dB on tap there is no reason to push it anyway.

Questions

Should I choose the Dual 2-Ohm or the Dual 4-Ohm ARC 12?

These two behave noticeably differently in the same enclosure, more so than most coil variants, so it is worth choosing deliberately.

The Dual 2-Ohm has a Qts of 0.416 and lands at Qtc 0.770 with F3 at 39.0 Hz in this cabinet. That is the tighter, better damped alignment with cleaner transient control. The Dual 4-Ohm has a Qts of 0.468 and lands at Qtc 0.873 with F3 at 36.6 Hz, reaching about two and a half hertz deeper with more lift near the corner frequency.

If accuracy matters most, take the Dual 2-Ohm. If you want the fullest bottom end and do not mind a livelier corner, take the Dual 4-Ohm. The enclosure is cut identically for both, so the only other consideration is which final impedance suits your amplifier.

Does this enclosure match Arc Audio's recommended volume?

Yes. Arc Audio publishes a sealed range for the ARC 12 of 0.9 minimum, 1.1 optimum and 1.25 maximum, stated as gross volumes. This cabinet is 1.155 gross and 1.085 net, which is five percent over their optimum and comfortably inside the range.

That agreement is a happy accident rather than a design target. The driver's 6 inch mounting depth requires 5.375 inches of internal cabinet height once the flush recess baffle, the milled magnet relief and motor clearance are accounted for, and that height on a 30 by 15 inch footprint happens to produce 1.155 gross. The geometry and the acoustics pointed at the same answer.

Are Arc Audio's published enclosure volumes gross or net?

Gross. Arc Audio labels every recommended enclosure volume in their manual as gross, for both sealed and ported designs, which is a less common convention than net and worth understanding before comparing their numbers to another brand's.

Gross volume is the raw internal airspace before the driver, bracing and any port hardware are subtracted. Arc publishes the ARC 12's displacement at 0.07 cubic feet, so their 1.1 gross optimum is roughly 1.03 cubic feet of actual net airspace. Every volume quoted on this page is stated explicitly as gross or net so the two cannot be confused.

How does this compare to the 10 inch ARC enclosure?

The 12 reaches deeper, plays louder on less power, and fits Arc's own recommendation. It produces F3 at 39.0 Hz on the Dual 2-Ohm against 43.7 Hz for the 10, and its 89 dB sensitivity is two decibels above the 10's 87 dB, which is a substantial real world difference. It also handles 350 watts RMS against 250.

The cost is half an inch of cabinet height, 7.625 inches against 7.125, and a larger 11 inch cutout. There is also a difference in how each cabinet relates to Arc's guidance: the 12 sits inside their recommended range, while the 10's mounting depth forces a volume above their stated maximum. If you have the clearance for either, the 12 is the stronger product.

How much power should I run to the ARC 12?

Arc Audio rates the ARC 12 at 350 watts RMS continuous with 700 watts musical, and lists an amplifier power range of 5 to 700 watts. Their manual is unusually direct: the RMS figure is the recommended continuous power for long term use, the driver handles roughly twice that in short bursts, and sustained operation above the RMS rating will burn the voice coil and is not covered under warranty.

At 89 dB sensitivity this driver does not need to be pushed. It produces meaningfully more output per watt than most subwoofers in this category, so 350 watts goes further than the number suggests. Arc also notes that clipping kills subwoofers rather than modest power, so a clean amplifier within the rating is the right approach.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. That recovers 3/4 inch of internal clearance and matters with an 11 inch cutout. A 3/8 inch relief is milled into the opposite panel behind the 6 1/2 inch magnet. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Corners are square, which is the Down Fire series standard. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
