This enclosure holds 0.74 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Arc Audio SW12D4 runs a system Qtc of 1.00–1.01 with half power at 41.8–42.0 Hz, and the cone reaches its 15.5 mm travel limit at 1108 W, above the driver’s 400 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1140 W — +32 W, or 3 percent more power for the same 15.5 mm of travel.

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The SW12D4 sits at 45.4–45.9, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

The box lifts resonance from 33.0 Hz free-air to 53–53 Hz and half power lands at 41.8–42.0 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 15.5 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 15.5 mm. Unfiltered that is 1108 W, reached first at 38 Hz. It sits above the 400 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1140 W before hitting the same 15.5 mm. That is 3 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

A 12 inch subwoofer that mounts in 2.4 inches. Front-loaded it is 2.23. That is the shallowest 12 in this program by a wide margin, and it is what lets this cabinet come in at exactly 6 inches tall.

Where the SW12 pulls ahead of the SW10 is resonance and compliance. Fs is 33.1 Hz against the 10's 39.3, and Vas is 33.44 liters against 12.96, nearly triple. Same mounting depth, same series, but the 12 reaches meaningfully lower: F3 of 41.9 Hz against 45.9. If you have the cutout room, the 12 is the better driver and it costs you less than an inch of extra cabinet height.

Qts of 0.624 is a healthy figure. At Arc's optimum 0.8 gross this lands at Qtc 1.007 with Fc 53.4 Hz, right around unity, which gives a modest lift at the corner without the exaggerated peak you get from high-Qts shallows. Arc's range runs 0.65 to 1.0 gross and the optimum is the right place on this driver.

Arc publishes full T/S for both series and parallel wiring and they are effectively identical: Fs 33.1 versus 33.0, Qts 0.624 versus 0.616, Vas 33.44 versus 33.73. One cabinet is correct for either. Pick your wiring purely on amplifier impedance.

Note Arc publishes sealed recommendations as gross, not net, unlike most manufacturers. We built to 0.806 gross to match their 0.8 optimum, roughly 0.74 net.

400 watts RMS, 800 peak, 532.97 square centimeters of cone. For a driver this thin that is a lot of capability. Dual voice coil in 2 ohm or 4 ohm, final impedance set at the driver.

Questions

How does this compare to the 10 inch Arc Audio SW Down Fire enclosure?

The 12 is the better driver and costs less than an inch of cabinet height. Both mount in 2.4 inches, but the SW12 has a free-air resonance of 33.1 Hz against the SW10's 39.3, and a Vas of 33.44 liters against 12.96. That produces an F3 of 41.9 Hz versus 45.9 for the 10. Cabinet heights are 6 inches for the 12 and 5.0625 for the 10, both on the same 30 by 15 footprint. The 12 also carries more power at 400 watts RMS against 350 and considerably more cone area. Choose the 10 only if the cutout or the last inch of height genuinely will not work.

How does a 12 inch subwoofer mount in 2.4 inches?

Arc engineered the SW Series specifically around minimum mounting depth, and the SW12 mounts in 2.4 inches or 2.23 inches when front-loaded. That is shallower than most 8 inch subwoofers. The design cost shows up in the Thiele-Small data as a higher free-air resonance and less compliance than a deep-motor 12 would have, but the SW12 still manages 33.1 Hz Fs and 33.44 liters of Vas, which is genuinely good for the format. Combined with our down fire cabinet the whole assembly stands 6 inches tall.

Does it matter whether I wire the voice coils in series or parallel?

Not for the enclosure alignment. Arc publishes full Thiele-Small data for both configurations and they are effectively identical: Fs 33.1 Hz series versus 33.0 parallel, Qts 0.624 versus 0.616, Vas 33.44 versus 33.73 liters. This cabinet is correct for either. Choose your wiring based purely on what impedance your amplifier is stable and efficient into.

Why does this page list gross volume when other enclosures list net?

Because Arc Audio publishes their sealed enclosure recommendations as gross volume rather than net, which is unusual. Most manufacturers state net volume, meaning the airspace remaining after the driver's displacement is subtracted. Arc states total internal volume before displacement. We built this cabinet to 0.806 cubic feet gross to match Arc's published 0.8 gross optimum, roughly 0.74 net. Both figures appear in the specifications so you can compare against either convention.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Why are the corners square instead of radiused?

Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, which matters with an 11 inch cutout in a cabinet only 6 inches tall. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Arc Audio SW12 in either dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit for either version.
