This enclosure holds 0.80 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Hertz Mille PRO MPS 300 S4 runs a system Qtc of 0.81 with half power at 39.5 Hz, and the cone reaches its 16.8 mm travel limit at 816 W, above the driver’s 500 W thermal rating, so heat stops you before travel does. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 995 W — +178 W, or 22 percent more power for the same 16.8 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

At 51.1 the Mille PRO MPS 300 S4 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

The box lifts resonance from 23.0 Hz free-air to 44 Hz and half power lands at 39.5 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 16.8 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 16.8 mm. Unfiltered that is 816 W, reached first at 22 Hz. It sits above the 500 W the driver can take thermally, so the voice coil gives up before the suspension does. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 995 W before hitting the same 16.8 mm. That is 22 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

A 24 Hz free-air resonance with a 64.9 liter Vas, in a driver that mounts in 3.46 inches. That is the combination that puts this cabinet's F3 at 39.5 Hz, which is among the deepest anything in the Down Fire line reaches. Add 16.8mm of Xmax and 500 watts RMS and the MPS 300 is a serious driver in a thin package.

Coil choice matters here and it is backwards from the 10 inch model. On the MPS 300 the S4 is the better damped driver at Qts 0.42, against the S2 at 0.51. On the MPS 250 it is the opposite. Same series, opposite pattern. If you read the specs on our 10 inch MPS enclosure, do not carry the assumption over.

In this cabinet the S4 lands at Qtc 0.812, controlled and tight. The S2 lands at 1.003 with a modest lift at the corner but reaches about 2.4 Hz deeper. Both are legitimate. If your amplifier is happy either way, the S4 for accuracy and the S2 for extension.

Hertz's data reconciles, which is worth noting after several manuals in this program that did not. Run their published Qts and Vas through sealed box math at their recommended volume and you land within 0.2 Hz of the Fc they print on both variants. Their enclosure table and their T/S table agree with each other.

Compare to the 10 inch MPS: this cabinet is 1.4375 inches taller and buys you roughly 11 Hz of extension on the S2 side. If you have the clearance, take the 12.

Single voice coil, so impedance is fixed by which model you buy. No wiring decision at the driver. Target 400 to 500 watts RMS.

Questions

Should I choose the MPS 300 S2 or the MPS 300 S4?

On this size the S4 is the better damped driver, with a free-air Qts of 0.42 against the S2's 0.51. In this cabinet the S4 lands at Qtc 0.812 and the S2 at 1.003. The S2 does reach deeper, F3 37.1 Hz against the S4's 39.5.

Important: this is the opposite of the 10 inch MPS 250, where the S2 is the tighter driver. Same series, reversed pattern between sizes. Both models are single voice coil, so impedance is fixed by the model - 2 ohms for the S2, 4 ohms for the S4. Check your amplifier first, then choose the S4 for control or the S2 for extension.

How does this compare to the 10 inch Hertz MPS Down Fire enclosure?

The 12 reaches substantially deeper for 1.4375 inches of additional cabinet height. This enclosure stands 6.375 inches against the 10 inch model's 4.9375, and its S2 variant reaches an F3 of 37.1 Hz against the 10's 48.4 Hz. That difference comes from the drivers: the MPS 300 has a 24 Hz free-air resonance and 64.9 liters of Vas, against 28 Hz and 24.5 liters on the MPS 250.

Both share the 30 by 15 inch footprint, the same 500 watt RMS rating and the same 16.8mm Xmax. Mounting depth is nearly identical at 3.46 inches versus 3.25. If your vertical clearance allows the 12, it is the clear choice. The 10 exists for installs where it does not.

Do your numbers match the Hertz manual?

Yes, and that is worth stating because it is not universal. Running Hertz's own published Qts and Vas through standard sealed box math at their recommended volume produces a corner frequency within 0.2 Hz of the figure printed in their manual on both variants. Their enclosure data and their Thiele-Small data agree with each other.

Several other manufacturers in this category publish enclosure tables that do not reconcile with their own driver parameters, which forces us to publish computed figures instead. Hertz did not have that problem.

How much excursion does this driver have?

16.8mm one-way, the same as the 10 inch model and exceptional for a shallow-mount driver. Combined with 500 watts RMS, a 3.46 inch mounting depth and a 24 Hz free-air resonance, the MPS 300 delivers real low frequency capability from a package thin enough for a down fire cabinet just over 6 inches tall.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Why are the corners square instead of radiused?

Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, which carries real structural load with an 11 inch cutout in a cabinet this shallow. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
