This enclosure holds 0.80 cu ft net per chamber. In it the Morel Ultimo PowerSlim PS124D runs a system Qtc of 1.07 with half power at 32.7 Hz, and the cone reaches its 11.0 mm travel limit at 261 W, below the driver’s 700 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 283 W — +22 W, or 8 percent more power for the same 11.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

EBP = Fs ÷ Qes = 34.3
SEALED 0–50 TRANSITION 50–100 PORTED 100–150 0 50 100 150 D4 34.3
D4 · EBP 34.3
EBP under 50 means a motor that wants a sealed load. The Ultimo PowerSlim PS124D sits at 34.3, inside that band, which is why this is a sealed build rather than a ported one.

02What the box does to it

0.80 cu ft against a 49.4 L Vas.

α = Vas ÷ Vb = 2.18  ·  Fc = Fs√(α+1) = 43 Hz  ·  Qtc = 1.07
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 +6 +0 -6 -12 -18 -24 FREQUENCY · Hz LEVEL · dB −3 dB
D4 · Qtc 1.07, Fc 43 Hz, F3 32.7 Hz
The box lifts resonance from 24.0 Hz free-air to 43 Hz and half power lands at 32.7 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 11.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

PXmax = 261 W unfiltered  →  283 W with a 25 Hz subsonic
20 30 50 70 100 150 200 0 4 8 12 FREQUENCY · Hz CONE TRAVEL · mm PAST LINEAR TRAVEL · Xmax 11.0 mm 261 W reaches Xmax here
D4 · 261 W, no filterD4 · 283 W with subsonic at 25 Hz, 24 dB/octXmax 11.0 mm one-way
Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 11.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 261 W, reached first at 32 Hz. It sits under the 700 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 283 W before hitting the same 11.0 mm. That is 8 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

This is the deepest-reaching single-driver cabinet in the entire Down Fire program. F3 of 34.2 Hz, from a driver that mounts in 3.4 inches, in a box 6.375 inches tall. Nothing else we build gets there.

The numbers behind it are a 24 Hz free-air resonance and a 49.4 liter Vas. For context, most shallow 12s in this program sit in the low 30s for Fs. Morel got this one down to 24, which is conventional-driver territory, in a shallow package.

700 watts RMS with 2100 watts of transient headroom, and the reason is the voice coil: 129.5mm, or 5.1 inches, wound in four layers of carbon on an aluminium former. Most shallow 12s run a 2 to 3 inch coil. Nearly double the diameter means far more surface area to shed heat, which is what sets continuous power handling.

At Morel's own 0.8 net the alignment lands at Qtc 1.070. Morel publishes 36 Hz F3 for this volume against our computed 34.2, so their data and ours agree within about 2 Hz. That is closer than most manuals in this category manage.

The Ultimo PowerSlim series won the EISA Best In-Car Subwoofer award for 2023-2024. Flat honeycomb Hexatech aluminium cone, double magnet EVC motor.

Compared to the 10 inch PowerSlim: 1.4375 inches more cabinet height buys you about 11 Hz of extension. If you have the clearance, this is the one to build. Dual 4 ohm coils, 2 ohms parallel or 8 ohms series at the driver. Target 350 to 700 watts RMS.

Questions

How does this compare to the 10 inch PowerSlim Down Fire enclosure?

The 12 reaches dramatically deeper for 1.4375 inches of additional cabinet height. This enclosure stands 6.375 inches and produces an F3 of 34.2 Hz. The 10 inch PowerSlim cabinet stands 4.9375 inches and produces 44.9 Hz. That is roughly 11 Hz.

The difference comes from the drivers. The PS124D has a 24 Hz free-air resonance and 49.4 liters of Vas, against 29.1 Hz and 25 liters on the PS104D. Both carry the same 700 watt RMS rating and the same 5.1 inch voice coil, and mounting depth is nearly identical at 3.4 inches versus 3.1. If your vertical clearance allows 6.375 inches, build the 12.

How does a shallow driver reach 34 Hz?

A 24 Hz free-air resonance paired with 49.4 liters of Vas. Those are the two parameters that set low frequency capability, and both are exceptional for a driver that mounts in 3.4 inches. Most shallow 12 inch subwoofers have a free-air resonance in the low to mid 30s, which caps how low they can go regardless of enclosure.

Morel achieved it through the double magnet EVC motor system and a suspension designed for long excursion in a short frame. The result in this cabinet is a predicted F3 of 34.2 Hz, the deepest single-driver figure in the Proline X Down Fire line.

How does this driver handle 700 watts at 3.4 inches deep?

The voice coil. Morel uses a 129.5mm coil, which is 5.1 inches in diameter, where most shallow 12 inch subwoofers run a 2 to 3 inch coil. Nearly double the diameter means substantially more surface area for heat dissipation, and heat is the limiting factor on continuous power handling.

The coil is wound in four layers of carbon on an aluminium former and paired with a double magnet EVC motor. That gives 700 watts RMS with 2100 watts of transient headroom in a 3.4 inch package.

How do I wire this enclosure and set my impedance?

The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. The PS124D has dual 4 ohm voice coils, so you set the final load at the driver: wire the two coils in parallel for a 2 ohm load, or in series for 8 ohms. Most single-driver builds run the 2 ohm configuration.

Morel rates this driver for a minimum of 350 watts and up to 700 watts RMS. Confirm your amplifier is stable at your chosen load and set gains within that range.

Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?

Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.

Why are the corners square instead of radiused?

Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, which carries real structural load with a 10.6 inch cutout and a 700 watt driver bolted to it. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Is the Morel PS124D subwoofer included with this enclosure?

No. This listing is for the enclosure only. Bring your own Morel Ultimo PowerSlim PS124D. The cutout and mounting depth are direct fit.
