This enclosure holds 0.76 cu ft net per chamber. In it the ResoNix GUS-12 runs a system Qtc of 0.67–0.72 with half power at 36.7–36.8 Hz, and the cone reaches its 20.0 mm travel limit at 676 W, below the driver’s 800 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1078 W — +402 W, or 60 percent more power for the same 20.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

At 50.0–51.9 the GUS-12 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

The box lifts resonance from 14.5 Hz free-air to 35–37 Hz and half power lands at 36.7–36.8 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 20.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 20.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 676 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 800 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1078 W before hitting the same 20.0 mm. That is 60 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

A free-air resonance of 14.5 Hz on a driver that mounts in four and a half inches. I have built enclosures for sixteen driver families in this program and nothing else comes close to that number. Most shallow 12s sit in the high 20s or low 30s. Conventional 12s with twice the mounting depth rarely get below 25.

Pair that with a Qts of 0.28 and you have a driver that can be properly damped in three quarters of a cubic foot and still reach into the 30s. That is the whole point of the GUS line and it is not marketing. ResoNix publishes full Klippel LSI and TRF data, commits to doing it for every production batch, and their enclosure recommendations reconcile exactly with their own T/S. Nobody else in this program does all three.

The nice thing about this cabinet is that both coil options land in the same place. D4 gives Qtc 0.716 and F3 36.7, D2 gives 0.668 and 36.8. A tenth of a hertz apart. Pick whichever suits your amplifier and stop thinking about it.

Two build notes. The vented rear cone assembly means the pole vent can be fully blocked with no penalty, so this box does not need the usual clearance allowance behind the motor. And ResoNix requires 60mm from the baffle surface to whatever is in front of the cone, which on a down fire box is the floor. Custom standoffs are included and they are not optional.

800 watts RMS. ResoNix states they do not underrate their drivers and that overpower damage is not warranty work. They also warn these stay composed until they suddenly do not, so respect the number.

Questions

How does a 4.5 inch deep driver reach 36.7 Hz?

The free-air resonance. The GUS-12 measures 14.5 Hz, which is exceptionally low for any 12 inch subwoofer and remarkable for one with a 4.539 inch mounting depth. Most shallow 12s sit in the high 20s or low 30s. A sealed enclosure always raises the system corner above the driver's Fs, so a low starting point is what makes deep extension possible in a small box.

Combined with a Qts of 0.28, the driver has both the low resonance and the motor control to reach a well damped alignment in three quarters of a cubic foot. ResoNix achieved it with a patent pending FEA-optimized overhung motor, a full length copper shorting sleeve, and a Nomex honeycomb cone with carbon fiber facing that stays stiff at high excursion.

Why does this enclosure come with standoffs?

Because ResoNix specifies a minimum clearance in front of the cone, and on a down fire enclosure the thing in front of the cone is the floor. Their requirement for the GUS-12 is 28mm between the surround and the obstruction, or 60mm measured from the baffle surface.

This cabinet ships with custom-fit standoffs machined to hold that clearance. Setting a down fire GUS enclosure flat on the floor would restrict the driver and compromise both output and mechanical safety. The standoffs are a required part of the design, not an accessory.

Should I choose the Dual 2-Ohm or Dual 4-Ohm GUS-12?

Acoustically it barely matters in this cabinet, which is unusual. The D4 lands at Qtc 0.716 with F3 at 36.7 Hz and the D2 at Qtc 0.668 with F3 at 36.8 Hz. A tenth of a hertz apart. Both share the identical Qts of 0.28 and near-identical 14.5 Hz resonance.

So choose based on your amplifier. Both are dual voice coil, so you set the final load at the driver. The D2 wired in parallel gives 1 ohm and in series gives 4; the D4 gives 2 ohms parallel and 8 series. Most builds run the D4 at 2 ohms into a quality monoblock. Confirm your amplifier's minimum stable impedance before choosing.

Is down firing acceptable for a GUS subwoofer?

Yes, and ResoNix addresses it directly. Their published guidance is that there is very little real world difference in sound between down firing and up firing, and that you should choose whichever makes the installation easier, more reliable, and easier to service.

That endorsement comes from the driver's manufacturer rather than from us. The one requirement is maintaining their specified 60mm clearance in front of the cone, which the included standoffs handle.

Does the pole vent need to stay unobstructed?

No, and this is a deliberate design feature of the GUS series. The cone uses a vented rear assembly attached to the voice coil former, which handles venting even when the pole vent is completely blocked. ResoNix states in their own documentation that the pole vent can be fully obstructed with no negative side effects.

That is why this cabinet can be built without the rear motor clearance allowance most drivers require, which keeps a 12 inch down fire enclosure to 6 inches tall.

How much power should I run to the GUS-12?

800 watts RMS, and not more. ResoNix is unusually direct about this: they state that the GUS series is not deliberately underrated the way many manufacturers rate their drivers, and that burnt voice coils or damage from bottoming out are not covered under warranty.

You can safely use an amplifier capable of more so long as delivered power is limited to 800 watts. ResoNix also notes that because these drivers stay linear and low distortion right up to their limits, it will not always be obvious when you are pushing too hard. Warning signs are mechanical noise, clacking, or a sudden loss of control.

How is this enclosure built?

V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling.

The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, with the outer layer machined as a flush recess so the driver bolts to the inner layer. That matters with an 11.164 inch cutout in a cabinet only 6 inches tall. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build, and custom-fit standoffs are included to maintain ResoNix's required floor clearance. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
