Installer's take
Of everything in the shallow category, this is the driver I would put in my own truck. 400 watts RMS, 8.4mm one-way Xmax, 2.5 inch four-layer coil, 3.65 inches deep. Nothing about it is showy. What makes it work is the T/S data: 34 Hz Fs and a 1.25 cubic foot Vas, which for a shallow 12 is genuinely good.
That is why this cabinet reaches a 38 Hz F3 at under 8 inches tall. Compare it to the P3 Shallow 10, which has a 40 Hz Fs and only 0.50 cubic feet of Vas and lands at 44.9 Hz with the D2 coil. Same series, same build quality, and the 12 buys you 6 Hz of extension for 1 inch of cabinet height. If your install has the vertical clearance, build the 12.
At 1.12 net the D2 lands at Qtc 0.974 with F3 at 39.4 Hz and the D4 at Qtc 0.974 with F3 at 38.1 Hz. Both sit just above unity with a modest lift at the corner. The coils are much closer together on the 12 than on the 10, where the gap is 0.795 against 0.969. So on this one, pick your coil based on what your amplifier wants and stop thinking about it.
The double baffle earns its keep here. An 11.22 inch cutout in a cabinet 7.875 inches tall leaves short panel spans and not much room for bracing geometry, so baffle rigidity carries more of the structural load than it would in a taller box. Two bonded 3/4 inch layers give the driver a mounting platform that will not flex.
Worth knowing if you compare our numbers to the manual: Rockford calculates Qtc on gross volume without subtracting driver displacement. Their published 1.01 for the 12 inch checks out exactly at 1.00 gross with the D2 coil. We subtract the driver and calculate on net, which is the more conservative method, so our figures read slightly higher. Same driver, different convention.
Both models are dual voice coil, so you set your final impedance by how you wire the coils at the driver. Target 300 to 400 watts RMS.
Questions
How does this compare to the 10 inch P3 Shallow enclosure?
Same 30 by 15 inch footprint, 1 inch taller, and meaningfully better low-frequency reach. The 12 lands at an F3 of 38.1 to 39.4 Hz depending on coil. The 10 lands at 39.6 to 44.9 Hz. The difference comes from the drivers rather than the cabinets: the P3 Shallow 12 has a 34 Hz free-air resonance and a 1.25 cubic foot Vas, against 40 Hz and 0.50 cubic feet on the 10. It also carries more power, 400 watts RMS against 300. If you have 7.875 inches of vertical clearance, the 12 is the better build.
Should I choose the P3SD2-12 or the P3SD4-12?
On the 12 it matters less than you might expect. Free-air Qts is 0.67 on the D2 and 0.72 on the D4, so they land at Qtc 0.974 and 1.047 in this cabinet with F3 within about 1 Hz of each other. Both give a similar character with a modest lift near the corner frequency. Choose based on what impedance your amplifier is happiest driving rather than on alignment differences.
Why does your Qtc differ from the figure in the Rockford manual?
Different convention, not a disagreement. Rockford calculates enclosure Qtc on gross internal volume without subtracting the driver's displacement. Their published 1.01 figure for the 12 inch checks out exactly when you run their numbers at 1.00 cubic feet gross with the D2 coil. We subtract the 0.086 cubic feet the driver occupies and calculate on net volume, which is the more conservative approach and reflects the air the driver actually sees. Same driver, same parameters, slightly higher published number on our side.
How do I wire this enclosure and set my impedance?
The enclosure has one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC. Both P3 Shallow models are dual voice coil, so your final impedance is set by how you wire the two coils at the driver itself. Choose the configuration that matches your amplifier's stable impedance rating, and confirm that load before powering the system.
Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?
Side mounted. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since the baffle faces the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.
Why are the corners square instead of radiused?
Down Fire cabinets are built with square corners as a series standard. The 3 inch top down corner radius used on other Proline X alignments does not apply here. A down fire box is a low, wide platform that typically sits flat against a floor or under a seat, and square corners maximize usable internal volume for a given footprint while keeping the cabinet stable on its mounting surface.
How is this enclosure built?
V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which is what keeps the cabinet airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The front baffle is a double layer at 1.5 inches, two bonded 3/4 inch sheets, standard across the Performance Optimized Series and doing real structural work on a cabinet this shallow with an 11.22 inch cutout. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
