Installer's take

The JL Audio 12W6v3 is one of those drivers where the box math actually matters. Some subs are forgiving, the JL Audio W3, the Rockford P2, the Kicker Comp series, they play close to spec across a wide range of enclosure volumes. The W6v3 is not one of those subs. It's a precision driver with a narrow window of ideal enclosure sizing, and if you miss the target by even a few tenths of a cubic foot you can hear the difference.

JL publishes exactly one recommended sealed volume for the 12W6v3: 1.0 cubic feet net internal. In that alignment the driver delivers Qtc 0.79, Fc 45.99 Hz, F3 41.62 Hz. This cabinet is engineered around those numbers. 1.105 cubic feet gross internal, minus the 12W6v3's 0.105 cubic foot driver displacement, equals exactly 1.0 net. Not 0.9. Not 1.1. Exactly 1.0. The trunk-load wedge geometry comes into play for the same reason it works with the IDQ wedges. One thing to remember: JL Audio explicitly says do not use a passive crossover coil in series with this driver. It will screw up the driver's low-frequency response and negate the point of buying an SQ subwoofer. Use your amp's built-in low-pass filter instead. Set the crossover somewhere between 80 and 100 Hz for musical accuracy. Start at 80 Hz and adjust from there based on how your midbass drivers integrate.

Wiring: the 12W6v3 is Dual 4-ohm only. There's no D2 variant of this driver. Parallel wiring gives you 2 ohms, series gives you 8 ohms. Pick based on your amp's stable impedance.
