This enclosure holds 0.75 cu ft net per chamber. In it the ResoNix GUS-12 runs a system Qtc of 0.67–0.72 with half power at 36.7–36.7 Hz, and the cone reaches its 20.0 mm travel limit at 686 W, below the driver’s 800 W thermal rating, so travel is what stops you here, not heat. Run a subsonic filter at 25 Hz and that becomes 1084 W — +398 W, or 58 percent more power for the same 20.0 mm of travel.

01Is it a sealed driver?

Efficiency bandwidth product places the motor before anything else is decided.

At 50.0–51.9 the GUS-12 sits in the transition band, not the sealed band. That is not a mismatch: a transition motor works in either alignment, and sealed buys a smaller box and a gentler roll-off at the cost of some low-end output. Stage 02 shows what this airspace actually does with it.

The box lifts resonance from 14.5 Hz free-air to 35–37 Hz and half power lands at 36.7–36.7 Hz, anechoic, before any cabin gain. This enclosure ships without a driver, so both coil variants the maker offers are plotted. They do not load the same box the same way.

03The watts that reach Xmax (in this enclosure)

Travel scales with the square root of power, so there is one wattage that puts the cone exactly on 20.0 mm — and a bigger one once a subsonic filter stops it wasting travel below the passband.

Every trace touches the limit and no further, because each is drawn at the exact power that puts that coil on 20.0 mm. Unfiltered that is 686 W, reached first at 20 Hz. It sits under the 800 W the driver can take thermally, so the enclosure sets the ceiling, not the voice coil. The dashed traces are the same driver behind a subsonic filter at 25 Hz, 24 dB/oct: stopping the cone wasting travel below the passband lets it take 1084 W before hitting the same 20.0 mm. That is 58 percent more amplifier for the price of one filter setting.

Installer's take

Wire the terminal cup before you set this box in the trunk. Once the tall face is against the seat back there is no getting behind it, and on a wedge you cannot tip it forward to reach the cup. Land it, test continuity, then position.

The driver goes in the way any flush mount driver goes in. Drop it into the machined recess, run the supplied stainless screws into the threaded inserts, snug them in a cross pattern. Nothing about this one needs special handling.

Measure the base depth, not the top. The cabinet is 11 inches deep at the trunk floor and 5.5 at the top, and it is 22.5 wide. The taper exists so the lid clears. The floor dimension is what decides the sale.

The chamber is 0.80 gross and the GUS-12 displaces 0.046, which puts the driver at 0.754 net against the 0.75 ResoNix publishes. If you have run a GUS-12 in something bigger and thought it needed more box, look at the numbers before you act on that. F3 stays inside a 36 to 39 Hz band from 0.45 all the way to 1.5 cubic feet. Bigger does not go lower on this driver. It only changes the shape.

There is a real cost to going bigger too. ResoNix notes the GUS-12 hits xmax at 20 Hz on 500 watts in a 1.5 cubic foot box, and it is rated for 800. Build it large and you give up a third of your power handling for damping you did not need. At 0.75 the driver takes everything the amp has.

Do not add polyfill. The light wall lining is there to control internal reflections and nothing more. Stuffing to a working density raises effective volume and moves the alignment off target.

Check the 28mm front clearance where the box actually ends up sitting. Because it fires rearward into the trunk, that envelope is your cargo area, and what obstructs it depends entirely on how the box sits and what gets loaded beside it.

Questions

Can this enclosure be run down firing?

No. This is a trunk mounted wedge and it works in one orientation only. The tall face sits flat against the back of the rear seat, the cabinet tapers away toward the trunk lid, and the driver fires rearward into the trunk. There are no feet and no baffle clearance gap. ResoNix themselves note there is very little real world difference in sound between down firing and up firing, so the orientation here is an installation decision rather than an acoustic compromise.

Will a standard 12 inch subwoofer fit this enclosure?

No. The opening is cut direct fit to the ResoNix GUS-12 at 283.6mm, and the chamber volume is built around that driver. A standard 12 will not fit the opening and would not see the correct airspace if it did. That is what Performance Optimized means on this line. The enclosure is designed backward from one driver rather than sized to a diameter class.

Why is the gross volume 0.80 cubic feet but the net acoustic volume 0.75?

Gross volume is the empty chamber. Net acoustic volume is what the driver actually loads into after its own body displaces air. The GUS-12 displaces 0.046 cubic feet. The chamber is built at 0.80 cubic feet gross, so once the driver goes in the working airspace is 0.754 cubic feet, which is the 0.75 target ResoNix publishes. The net figure is the one to enter into a modeling program.

Why not build a bigger box for more low end?

Because on this driver a bigger box does not buy low end. Running ResoNix published parameters, F3 stays inside a 36 to 39 Hz band across their entire recommended range from 0.45 up to 1.5 cubic feet. Volume changes the character of the response, not how deep it plays. There is also a real cost. ResoNix notes that at 1.5 cubic feet the GUS-12 reaches xmax at 20 Hz with only 500 watts, well under its 800 watt rating, so the larger box trades away power handling. At 0.75 cubic feet the driver takes its full rated power.

How much trunk space does this enclosure actually take?

It is 22.5 inches wide and 15 inches tall, with depth running 11 inches where it meets the trunk floor and tapering to 5.5 inches at the top. The taper is the point. Because the cabinet gives height back as it runs out toward the trunk lid, the lid closes over it and the space above the box stays usable. When you are checking whether it fits, the 11 inch floor measurement is the one that matters, not the top.

What clearance does the GUS-12 need in front of the driver?

ResoNix specifies 28mm minimum clearance in front of the GUS-12, measured from the height of the surround. At more than 20mm of Klippel verified one way excursion, that is the operational envelope of the suspension rather than optional headroom. Since the driver fires rearward into the trunk, this is also a cargo question. Anything loaded behind the enclosure needs to stay outside that envelope.

How is the enclosure wired and what amplifier does it need?

One Proline X terminal cup is side mounted and pre wired to the driver position with 12 gauge OFC, so the only connection you make is from the amplifier to the cup. Final impedance is set by how you wire the GUS-12 dual voice coils, which is your choice at the driver. The GUS-12 is rated at 800 watts RMS in its suggested enclosure, so a monoblock capable of that figure at your chosen impedance is the target. At the 0.75 cubic foot alignment the driver will take its full rated power.

Does this include the ResoNix GUS-12 subwoofer?

No. This is an enclosure only product and the GUS-12 driver is purchased separately from ResoNix Sound Solutions. The enclosure ships with 8/32 threaded inserts installed, stainless machine screws, a pre wired terminal cup, and polyfill wall lining already installed. Audio Intensity is the exclusive enclosure builder for the ResoNix GUS platform.
