Installer's take
This box exists for one reason: the space under a rear bench is 12 inches deep and a 15 inch cabinet does not go in it. Everything else follows from that.
The first thing to get right is not acoustic, it is mechanical. The 10TW3 flange is 11.2 inches across the tab ears and 10.5 on the minor axis. In a 12.25 inch deep box the ears have to run along the length. Lay the drivers out the other way and they do not bolt down. Both cutouts are set that way and it is called out on the page so nobody assumes otherwise. Baffle land works out to 9/16 inch fore and aft, which is comfortable on a double baffle where the driver bolts to the inner layer.
The second layer of the baffle is 1/2 inch here rather than the usual 3/4. That keeps the outside dimension at 6.5 inches while buying a quarter inch of internal height, and across a 44.5 by 12.25 footprint a quarter inch is roughly 0.06 cubic feet of net volume. Small change, and it is what moves each chamber from 0.475 up to 0.507.
That 0.507 matters because JL's sealed optimum for this driver is 0.50. We are seven thousandths over it. The result is Qtc 0.956 and F3 40.0 Hz, against 0.960 and 40.1 Hz in our standard 30 by 15 dual TW3. Same alignment, four thousandths of Qtc apart. The shallow format costs nothing acoustically, which is not usually how this goes.
Worth saying plainly: 0.956 is well above the 0.707 maximally flat reference. That is the TW3, not the cabinet. This driver is voiced for output and impact in small sealed boxes, and JL's own recommended volume lands it there. If you want a flat anechoic curve out of a TW3 you would need about 2.2 cubic feet per driver, which is not a shallow enclosure in any format.
Separate chambers, full height bonded divider, one shared side mounted cup fed in parallel to both positions. On a 44.5 inch span the divider is doing structural work as well as acoustic. 82.1 dB sensitivity means these want the full 400 watts each rather than half.
Questions
Why is this cabinet 44.5 inches wide instead of 30?
Because it is only 12.25 inches deep. The standard Performance Optimized Down Fire platform is 30 wide by 15 deep, and this application needs a cabinet that fits a space nearly three inches shallower than that.
Airspace has to come from somewhere. Losing depth means recovering it from width, so the cabinet runs 44.5 inches long instead of 30 and still keeps each driver in a properly sized separate chamber at 6.5 inches tall. If your available space is wide and shallow rather than deep, this is the shape that works.
How does this compare to the standard 30 x 15 dual TW3 enclosure?
Same alignment, different shape. The standard cabinet is 30 by 15 by 7.6875 inches and gives each driver 0.50 cubic feet net, landing at Qtc 0.960 with F3 at 40.1 Hz. This cabinet is 44.5 by 12.25 by 6.5 and gives each driver 0.507 net, landing at Qtc 0.956 with F3 at 40.0 Hz.
Four thousandths of Qtc and a tenth of a hertz apart. Acoustically these are the same enclosure. The choice between them is purely about what shape fits your vehicle: the standard platform is deeper and taller in a shorter run, this one is long and shallow for under a rear bench.
Why do the drivers have to be rotated?
Because the 10TW3-D4 flange is not round. JL Audio's tab-ear mounting design measures 11.2 inches across the ears and 10.5 inches on the minor axis, so the driver has a long dimension and a short one.
In a 12.25 inch deep cabinet the 11.2 inch ear span will not sit across the depth with usable material either side. Both baffle positions are therefore laid out with the tab ears running along the 44.5 inch length of the cabinet, putting the 10.5 inch minor axis across the depth with 9/16 inch of baffle land fore and aft. It is a small detail that decides whether the driver physically bolts down, which is exactly the sort of thing a woofer specific enclosure is supposed to have already solved.
What does a Qtc of 0.956 sound like?
Fuller and more impactful than a flat alignment. Qtc describes how a sealed system behaves near its corner frequency, and the textbook reference is 0.707, called maximally flat. Above that the system develops a rise just before the rolloff begins, which adds perceived weight and punch at the cost of some transient control.
At 0.956 this cabinet has real lift near the corner. That is a property of the driver rather than of the shallow footprint: our standard 30 by 15 inch dual TW3 cabinet lands at 0.960 in JL's own recommended volume. The TW3 is voiced for output and impact in compact sealed enclosures, and reaching a flat 0.707 would require roughly 2.2 cubic feet per driver, which is not a shallow enclosure in any format.
How is this enclosure wired, and how do I set my final impedance?
The enclosure uses one side-mounted Proline X terminal cup with a single pair of posts, pre-wired in 12 gauge OFC to both driver positions in parallel. You do not wire the two chambers separately at the amplifier.
Final impedance is set at the drivers. Each 10TW3-D4 has dual 4-ohm voice coils, so you choose how to wire the two coils on each driver and that determines the load the amplifier sees through the cup. Wire both drivers identically, since mismatched wiring between chambers will split power unevenly. Confirm the resulting load against your amplifier's minimum stable impedance before powering the system.
Where is the terminal cup located on a down fire enclosure?
Side mounted, and there is one cup serving both chambers rather than one per chamber. Every Proline X Performance Optimized enclosure uses a side mounted terminal cup regardless of alignment, whether standard, wedge, or down fire. On this cabinet that keeps the connection fully accessible with the enclosure in its installed position, since both baffles face the floor. The cup is our Proline X ABS and carbon fiber composite unit, recessed, with stainless hardware, copper ring terminals, and pre-wired 12 gauge OFC.
How is this enclosure built?
V-groove and dado joinery, CNC-cut on ShopSabre routers from Langboard Elite MDF. Every panel joint is a machined interlocking groove that mechanically locks the panels before adhesive is applied, which keeps both chambers airtight under sustained pressure cycling. The chamber divider is a full-height bonded 3/4 inch panel, which also ties the front and rear walls together across the 44.5 inch span.
The front baffle is a double layer at 1.25 inches: a 3/4 inch inner layer with a 1/2 inch outer layer machined as a flush recess, so each driver bolts to the inner layer. The thinner outer layer is deliberate. It recovers a quarter inch of internal height without growing the outside of the cabinet, which is what puts each chamber on JL's 0.50 target. Baffle land is 9/16 inch fore and aft of each cutout. Perimeter cross-bracing and pre-installed polyfill in each chamber complete the build. Assembled and inspected in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
